LEGO Level 2: Simple and Motorized Machines

Prerequisites: Age - 8+ year-olds
Schedule: Classes start May 31th and end on August 23rd every Sunday at 11:00 AM.

The Simple and Powered Machines program introduces and provides students a deeper understanding of science and engineering concepts.
It introduces the concept of Simple Machines as Wheel and Axle, Lever, Pulley, Inclined plane, Wedge, Screw, Gear, Cam, Paul, and Ratchet, teach how to calculate the mechanical advantage of these machines. Learning is reinforced by building machines using specialized Lego kit, conducting experiments, and recording the findings on worksheets.
The course then introduces students to structures, and students will learn what makes a structure strong. Students also get engaged in hands-on activities building Bean Balance, powered Tower Crane, Ramp, powered Gear Racer, Catapult, Hand Cart, Powered Merry Go Round, and more.
A problem is introduced, solutions brainstormed, a concept is taught, and students build machines using the simple machine concept. The activities lead students to make use of the scientific method through observation, reasoning, prediction, and critical thinking.
Every week students will be assigned videos to review and hands-on & online assignments to complete after the class to reinforce learning. At the end of the course, the students are assigned a problem to solve, which they solve using the concepts of the simple and powered machines.
The Simple and Powered Machines curriculum covers concepts and engages students in activities aligned to Science and Engineering Practices outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
PS NOTE: Students will have access to the online course for six months after the class.

Materials required: Students will have to buy a specialized kit to be a part of the class. Although the kit costs $199.00, it will stay with you for years to come and is an excellent learning investment. This kit can be used as an add-on kit to the Lego EV3 Robotics kit and help with competitions. Once enrolled in the class, details on where to buy will be emailed.
